StartPage.com & Privacy Expert Philip Zimmermann Dialogue with Edward Snowden
In the evening of the 10th of November HSD Campus resident Startpage.com/Startmail.com is going to open up a dialogue on online privacy through a live streaming interview with Edward Snowden during the release of the movie Snowden. Privacy search engine StartPage.com and distributor Independent Films are going to present the event Snowden Live. Via a live streaming connection at Pathé Tuschinski in Amsterdam they will interview Snowden who is currently located in Russia. Privacy expert Philip Zimmermann will also talk with Snowden. This week Phil Zimmermann, founder of PGP and CTO of Silent Circle, was introduced to the HSD community. Startpage.com/Startmail.com uses Zimmermann's encryption software for their services and are very happy that Zimmermann will be part of the Q&A session. Zimmermann recenlty moved to The Netherlands and works with HSD partners KPN and Delft University of Technology.
Snowden & Online Privacy
Snowden, who worked for the National Security Agency (NSA), became world famous after he handed over classified information documents related to NSA espionage activities in 2013. His disclosures revealed numerous global surveillance programs. Snowden's act has placed the awareness around online privacy high on the agenda of many organisations. The ongoing discussion on encryption divides the world of cyber security experts. Some cyber security professionals and organisations favour the backdoor option while others do not. Ronald Prins of Fox-IT recently published a blog on this topic. "The current option that is advocated is the backdoor option. This option allows that secret services to be able to unlock encrypted data with their own key. But what will happen with those keys?"
