In the future, organisations that do not properly secure their digital data may be fined by the Data Protection Authority (Dutch: College Bescherming Persoonsgegevens). This is one of the measures recently added to the Data Protection Act (Dutch: Wet Bescherming Persoonsgegevens). When an organisation fails to properly secure data or doesn’t report a data leak, it can receive a fine of up to 810,000 Euros.

However, as the amendments are aimed at increasing responsibility of the storage and use of data, members of Dutch parliament are also emphasising the importance of educating organisations on how to deal with date protection.
