1.5 Billion Euros for Secure Societies (Horizon 2020)
Horizon 2020 is the new EU Research and Innovation programme with nearly €80 billion of funding available from 2014 and 2020. One of the focal areas of Horizon 2020 is ‘Secure Societies’. The Horizon 2020 budget for ‘Secure Societies’ is approximately 1.5 billion Euros (2014-2020).
Seen as a means to drive economic growth and create jobs, Horizon 2020 has the political backing of Europe’s leaders and the Members of the European Parliament. They agreed that research is an investment in Europe’s future and so put it at the heart of the EU’s blueprint for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth and jobs.
Security presents fundamental challenges that cannot be resolved by independent and sector-specific treatment but rather need more ambitious, coordinated and holistic approaches. Horizon 2020 emphasizes on excellent science, industrial leadership and tackling societal challenges. The goal is to ensure Europe produces world-class science, removes barriers to innovation and makes it easier for the public and private sectors to work together in delivering innovation. The ‘Secure Societies Challenge’ will contribute to the implementation of the policy goals of the Europe 2020 strategy, the Security Industrial Policy, the Internal Security Strategy and the Cyber Security Strategy.
Next week, 15 January, the European Commission organises an event to explain Horizon 2020 in relation to cyber security.
