The Hague University of Applied Sciences and Thales Netherlands are extending their cooperation by four years. Yesterday Peter Vroom (Director Faculty IT & Design, De Haagse Hogeschool) and Lukas Roffel (Chief Technical Officer, Thales) signed the extended cooperation agreement. As a result, The Hague University of Applied Sciences and Thales will continue to work together on innovative practice-oriented research into cyber security in the coming years.

The Hague University of Applied Sciences has a strong profile in the field of cyber security, through the practice-oriented, innovative research within the Centre of Expertise Cyber Security. Under the leadership of leading lector Rutger Leukfeldt, the Centre of Expertise captured a strong position as a knowledge institution of national importance. What is unique about the Centre of Expertise is the daily multidisciplinary practice-oriented research in collaboration with companies, governments (including the national police and various municipalities) and knowledge institutions (such as the Netherlands Study Center for Crime and Law Enforcement). Through the extended collaboration, both parties want to continue to strengthen each other in innovative practice-oriented research.

The technical side of cybersecurity

Thales is an expert in designing and delivering solutions that protect states, cities and critical infrastructures in a world that is becoming increasingly unpredictable, with emerging cyber threats. Thales works for many different agencies and governments such as Defense, the automotive business and banking. Within the collaboration, Thales focuses primarily on the technical side of cybersecurity, such as providing systems that detect cyber threats.

Lecturer Rutger Leukfeldt: "We are very happy with the collaboration with Thales. We like to zoom in on current and societal issues linked to cybersecurity. In cooperation with Thales, a company that encounters all these issues on a daily basis, we can look ahead and anticipate possible threats very well."

To further shape the collaboration, as of February 1, 2023, Dr. Gerard Hoekstra has been appointed from Thales at the Centre of Expertise Cyber Security as special lecturer of the Network & Systems Engineering lectureship. Professor Gerard Hoekstra: "We want to use each other's expertise. Within the professorship we want to develop innovations in three areas: how do we determine who gets access to a system and when that access is acceptable? How do we ensure that people can use the Internet of Things safely? And how do we build systems that are very secure on the one hand and user-friendly on the other?"
