Collaboration Between Businesses and Colleges: Cyber Experts in Education 

Universities of Applied Sciences are looking for sustainable collaboration with cyber security companies. This is based on a shared interest, namely training the cyber talent for the future. There is already a shortage of good cybersecurity professionals. Companies can make a meaningful contribution to reducing this shortage by deploying cybersecurity experts who want to (are intrinsically motivated) in education. If the collaboration between company, professional and school clicks, this means a 5x win - not only for these three, but also for the students and society at large. HSD Office therefore calls on cyber security companies to deploy experts to help innovate education. This as part of the 'Hybrid cyber security teachers in middle and higher technical education' pilot project that HSD Office is running with a number of educational institutions: The Hague University of Applied Sciences, Leiden University of Applied Sciences and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.  

Possible roles for the hybrid professional

The most far-reaching construction is that of a hybrid lecturer, i.e., a professional who works as a cyber security expert in the business world (job 1) and also - with teaching qualifications - teaches at a university of applied sciences (job 2). This often proves to be a bridge too far for cyber security professionals. But think also of other roles: that of expert, instructor, practice supervisor, coach, assistant. Universities of applied sciences are open to working with an in-growth or entry-level model, in which the instructor and expert jointly design modules in the educational programme, look at how they divide the roles and ensure that the supervision of students is of good quality also from a didactic perspective.

Sustainable cooperation between the business community and education

Sustainable collaboration between the business community and education takes many forms, such as field labs, joint research, events, projects, internships. The deployment of hybrid cyber security experts in education is also part of this. In this pilot, we encounter practical objections from both sides. Finding good matches is not easy. HSD focuses on what can be done and how this can be achieved. We work with six critical success factors, the 6Cs: Construction, Context, Competencies, Credentials, Collaboration and Commitment - see here some practical infographics about these 6Cs and here a video with explanation (in Dutch language). 

Scouting top talent and educational expertise closer together

In this pilot, HSD is the connecting link between the participating universities of applied sciences, the HSD Partners and the cyber security professionals who are interested. How wonderful it would be if we could realise a number of matches together in the coming months. Sustainable cooperation requires investments from all parties involved - company, school, cyber pro - and delivers unique benefits, such as being able to scout top talent and learning from educational experts.

Samenwerking bedrijven en hogescholen: cyber experts in het onderwijs 

Hogescholen zijn op zoek naar duurzame samenwerking met cybersecurity bedrijven. Dit vanuit een gedeeld belang, namelijk het opleiden van het cyber talent voor de toekomst. Nu al is er een tekort goede cybersecurity professionals. Bedrijven kunnen een betekenisvolle bijdrage leveren aan het terugploegen van dit tekort door cybersecurity experts die dat willen (intrinsiek gemotiveerd zijn) in te zetten in het onderwijs. Als de samenwerking tussen bedrijf, professional en school klikt dan betekent dit een 5x win - niet alleen voor genoemde drie maar ook voor de studenten en de maatschappij. HSD doet daarom een oproep aan cybersecurity bedrijven om experts in te zetten om het onderwijs te helpen vernieuwen. Dit in het kader van de pilot ‘Hybride docenten cybersecurity in technisch beroepsonderwijs die de HSD met een aantal onderwijsinstellingen draait: de Haagse Hogeschool, de Hogeschool Leiden (opleiding digitaal forensisch onderzoek) en de Hogeschool van Amsterdam.  

Mogelijke rollen voor de hybride professional

De meest vergaande constructie is die van een hybride docent, d.w.z. een professional die als cybersecurity expert werkt in het bedrijfsleven (baan 1) en ook - met onderwijsbevoegdheid - les geeft op een hogeschool (baan 2). Dat blijkt vaak een brug te ver voor cybersecurity professionals. Maar denk ook aan andere rollen: die van expert, instructeur, praktijkbegeleider, coach, assistent. Hogescholen staan open voor het werken met een ingroei- of opstapmodel, waarbij docent en expert samen modules in het onderwijsprogramma ontwerpen, kijken hoe zij de rollen verdelen en zorgen dat de begeleiding van studenten kwalitatief en didactisch goed is geborgd.

Duurzame samenwerking bedrijfsleven en onderwijs

Duurzame samenwerking tussen het bedrijfsleven en het onderwijs kent vele vormen, denk aan field labs, gezamenlijk onderzoek, evenementen, projecten, praktijkstages. De inzet van hybride cybersecurity experts in het onderwijs hoort hier ook bij. In deze pilot komen we praktische bezwaren tegen van beide kanten. Het vinden van goede matches is niet makkelijk. HSD focust op wat er wél kan en hoe dat te realiseren is. We werken met zes kritische succesfactoren, de 6C’s: Constructie, Context, Competenties, Credentials, Coöperatie en Commitment - zie hier enkele praktische infographics over deze 6C’s en hier een filmpje met uitleg (in het Nederlands). 

Scouten van toptalent èn onderwijsexpertise dichterbij

In deze pilot is HSD de verbindende schakel tussen de deelnemende hogescholen, de HSD-Partners en de cybersecurity professionals die geïnteresseerd zijn. Hoe mooi zou het zijn als we de komende maanden samen een aantal matches realiseren. Duurzame samenwerking vraagt om investeringen van alle betrokken partijen - bedrijf, school, cyber pro - en levert unieke voordelen op, denk bijvoorbeeld aan het kunnen scouten van toptalent en het leren van onderwijsexperts.
