From 26-28 November, the fourth edition of the Hackathon for Good took place. During the weekend over 100 participants from all over the world have developed innovative solutions for global social issues, using data. In Teams, they worked on 8 challenges of amongst others the Ministry of Defense, OM, Police, Greenport and RHIA about deepfakes, anti fraud, food waste & water risk mitigation, satellite observation and AI & Drones. The teams pitched their solutions to a jury, resulting in one winning team: New Designers.

The challenge they worked on was combating horizontal fraud and their focus was on the problem of student housing scamming. During the hackathon they launched

www.trusthousing.nl: the first student housing scamming detection and prevention system. What was their concept behind?

New Designers: "We help international students who, due to lack of experience and knowledge of the Dutch housing market, are easy targets for scammers. The product is a browser extension and website service all powered by our own TrustMark™ algorithm. The algorithm detects red flags in online conversations and housing ads. Our platform also offers a guide into the Dutch housing market and a safe place to close the deal with landlords. Students now have an expert that is always inside their device to help them safely find a home in the Netherlands."

The online/hybrid Hackathon was hosted from The Hague Tech, located in The Hague, city of peace, justice & security. Irakli Beridze (UNICRI), Jill Wilkinson (Humanity Hub), Sharon Buys (Tech Tegen Corona) and Joris den Bruinen (HSD) were part of the jury of the final pitch sessions.

AI for Good fits The Hague as hub for Security, Peace & Justice of The Dutch AI Coalition (NLAIC). The NLAIC working group 'Security, Peace & Justice' is chaired by HSD. Therefore HSD aligned the Hackathon with two challenge owners, Prosecution Office (OM) as part of the Ministry of Justice & Security and the Ministry of Defense.
