Security & Rule of Law - Applied Research Fund: Call for Evidence-Informed Ideas

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) is calling for evidence-informed ideas that will provide new insights in international responses to new threats and challenges to peace, security, and development. It is part of the Applied Research Fund within the research programme Security & Rule of Law in Fragile and conflict Affected Settings.

The aim of this call for proposals is to better attune the international response to new and upcoming threats and challenges to peace, security, and development in Fragile and Conflict-Affected Settings (FCAS). Such threats and challenges include for example: the changing nature of violent conflict; the impact of transnational organised crime as a driver of conflict; and extreme fragmentation amongst armed groups and illicit networks, combining crime, politics and business.

A maximum budget of 500,000 euros is available. The maximum budget for a single project is 25,000 euros and a project can run for a maximum of three months. The applicants can budget for costs that directly attribute to the project: personnel costs of project staff, and research and project activities costs.

Researchers with a demonstrable track record in security & rule of law policy research employed by any organisation from across the globe that has a focus on research on or on the design and/or implementation of policies or approaches for security and rule of law reform programmes in specific Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs) and regions, can apply (as main applicant). Researchers from non-traditional (research) organisations (such as think-tanks, NGO’s) are encouraged to apply.

All applications will be evaluated on their relevance for policy and/or practice and innovativeness. Each project should contribute to two objectives:
• Provide evidence-informed, new ideas (for research, projects, programmes, policies, approaches or tools) for international responses in face of new threats and challenges to peace, security, and development;
• Unlock the generated ideas for practitioners, in such a way that they can easily be applied for agenda setting or for (re-)designing relevant (conflict-sensitive) and effective reform programmes in FCAS and/or for developing further research programmes.

Deadline
Applications can be submitted ultimately until 6 November 2015, 14.00 hrs CET. However, during this period, three assessment rounds are performed for proposals received at the deadlines of respectively 17 April 2015, 14.00 hrs CET, 17 July 2015, 14.00 hrs CET and 6 November 2015, 14.00 hrs CET.
