Policy Research Corporation Report: The Hague Security Delta

Today the Policy Research Corporation released a report on The Hague Security Delta (HSD). In this report the current state of the security sector in The Hague, the Netherlands, Europe, and the world are analyzed. It shows that The Hague, in addition to being  the city of peace and justice, has developed itself into a leading international security region with innovative projects in the following areas: national security, cyber security, critical infrastructure, forensics, and education & research.

Achievements to Date

The security sector in the region of The Hague mainly profiles itself, both in terms of turnover and number of jobs, in non-traditional security (e.g. cyber security). Some 400 branches of companies and institutions in the region are directly involved in security. They provided 13,400 jobs, had a turnover of almost 1.7 billion euros and realized an added value of 820 million euros. Despite  the economic crisis, an average annual growth figure of 4.1 percent for the period 2006-2012 was shown. The turnover of the overall Dutch security sector that year was around 6 billion euros. 

Ambitions for the Future

The report indicates that the global security sector is expected to grow by an extra 150 billion euros, and that the security cluster in The Hague region will double its turnover to 2.5 billion euros by 2020. The number of jobs related to the security cluster in The Hague region will increase by a quarter to about 17,000. Forensics and cyber security will be the two main areas of growth. The report provides a number of recommendations and conditions to realize future growth, amongst which access to capital, synergy between innovation programs and regions, and the Dutch government to play a bigger role as launching customer.
