In a recent workshop at the HSD Campus, AI-MAPS researchers collaborated with Impact Coalition Safety & Security, VNG, and  Security Delta (HSD) to delve into the Dutch 'Principles for the Digital Society.' The workshop, held on Thursday, February 28, aimed to explore the practical implications of these principles for municipalities and technology companies.

Towards the end of 2022, the Association of Dutch Municipalities (VNG) unanimously approved the Principles for the Digital Society, providing a guiding framework for policies related to digital data collection and biometric surveillance technology. AI-MAPS researchers, contributors to the principles' development, actively sought research questions for their second use case involving fixed private cameras capturing public spaces, including devices like 'smart' doorbells and shop cameras.

The workshop focused on key questions: How can municipalities and technology suppliers effectively apply these principles in procurement and design? What impact might this have on private-sector products and services? How practical and understandable are these principles, especially in light of upcoming European legislation?

For a detailed exploration of these questions and insights gained during the workshop, read the full blog here.
