Organised by:
NATO NCI Agency, Europol, The Hague Security Delta

Given the tremendous success of last year, NATO, Europol and The Hague Security Delta are excited to host another 50 students and young professionals, who will participate in the International Cyber Security Summer School. This year’s edition, which will take place in The Hague - from August 21st to August 26th, will focus on, inter alia, the contemporary developments and innovations in the field of cyber security, such as digital currencies, but also on cybercrime threats and trends (e.g. darkweb, crime as a service). Furthermore, you will be able to meet security professionals, working for various (inter)national public and private actors, such as the NCIA, Europol, the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice, etc.

The International Cyber Security Summer School (ICSSS) is an annual summer school, organized by NATO NCI Agency, Europol, and The Hague Security Delta. The first edition took place in 2015, starting with 40 students. Given the success, all three partners decided to host a 2016 edition, allowing 50 students to participate in the program.

Given the digitization of our society, cyber security is rising on the political agenda, as the consequences of attacks, incidents and security breaches are increasing. In 2014, the JP Morgan Chase hack exposed the data of 83 million accounts, making it one of the largest cyber-attacks in history. In 2011, Sony lost personal data of 77 million users, following the PlayStation network hack, which forced the company to shut it down for nearly three weeks, costing them 171 million dollar. The West itself isn’t necessarily innocent either, as the US targeted the Iranian uranium enrichment facilities in 2010, using Stuxnet, a malicious computerworm, disrupting the operations.

The International Cyber Security Summer School allows students and young professionals to gain deeper knowledge and understanding of cyber security concepts, as they will learn about the latest developments and the cutting edge cyber security features that exist today. In previous editions, students received lectures and insiders’ perspectives from a variety of industry experts, working for, inter alios, Europol, NATO, the Dutch Department of Security and Justice, The Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service, and the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX).
