With the signing of a Letter of Intent, the first phase of the Automated Security Operations consortium was launched this week. The TNO-led consortium, in close cooperation with HSD Office, focuses on the automated detection of cyberthreats using advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence with the aim of safeguarding a secure and robust digital economy in the region. This is the context for exploring cooperation with the province of South Holland, the Rotterdam–The Hague metropolitan area and the municipality of The Hague. The partners in the cybersecurity consortium are: HSD Office, Hudson Cybertec, Compumatica, Secura, Elastic and KPN.

During the first phase, lasting until the end of 2019, a multi-year implementation programme is being developed. The programme will be implemented from Q2 2020 onward. The consortium will be expanded with cybersecurity companies and knowledge and educational institutions on the basis of the approach developed.

The Netherlands is experiencing the fast-growing digitalisation of processes and services and has thus achieved a strong economic position. Critical sectors such as logistics, healthcare and the manufacturing industry are transforming their business models and processes under the influence of digitalisation in order to remain competitive. This growing digitalisation makes the Netherlands susceptible to cyberattacks. This is particularly true in light of the fact that the techniques used by cybercriminals to break into corporate and governmental networks are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

The major challenge for the implementation of cybersecurity solutions, including those based on AI, is that data must be exchanged on a large scale and at various levels in order to be able to immediately detect and act on anomalies. An integrated, cross-sectoral approach between the public and private sectors is a prerequisite to achieving automated cybersecurity solutions for threat and risk analysis, decision-making and responses that will enable us to meet today’s challenges.

The Consortium Automated Security Operations is an example of an initiative that is in line with the Dutch Strategic Action Plan for AI, which was launched on 8 October by Secretary of State for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, Mona Keijzer.
