Trends in Security Information
The HSD Trendmonitor is designed to provide access to relevant content on various subjects in the safety and security domain, to identify relevant developments and to connect knowledge and organisations. The safety and security domain encompasses a vast number of subjects. Four relevant taxonomies (type of threat or opportunity, victim, source of threat and domain of application) have been constructed in order to visualize all of these subjects. The taxonomies and related category descriptions have been carefully composed according to other taxonomies, European and international standards and our own expertise.
In order to identify safety and security related trends, relevant reports and HSD news articles are continuously scanned, analysed and classified by hand according to the four taxonomies. This results in a wide array of observations, which we call ‘Trend Snippets’. Multiple Trend Snippets combined can provide insights into safety and security trends. The size of the circles shows the relative weight of the topic, the filters can be used to further select the most relevant content for you. A fire can be described as the ignition of a fuel source (such as gasoline, wood or gas) in combination with oxygen, which causes light, heat and flames. Fires can intentionally or accidentally be ignited. For example, forest fires in a dry season can be caused accidentally by one single cigarette that is not properly put out by an individual. Or lightning may strike a tree and set the forest on fire. Other fires are intentionally lit to be of use to an individual, such as in a fireplace or in an industrial oven.
Fires can cause physical damage through burning, which in its turn can threathen all physical things, but also produces smoke that can sufficate all living things and lead to atmospheric pollution and water contamination. Fire prevention intends to reduce sources of ignition, early warning systems (smoke detectors, thermal camera's) and includes education to avoid causing fires. Fire protection systems intend to minimize the damage resulting from a fire, for instance heat resisting doors and fire sprinklers. Fire fighting can be done by a number of means ranging from blankets, fire extinguishers to water hoses. To mitigate the financial impact of fires, fire insurance can be bought. Uncontrolled fires are usually put out by a fire brigade (such as in a residential building), but the military can also be deployed when large fires need to be combatted (such as in large forest fires). In case of large fires, planes can be utilized to drop large amounts of water at the time.
