From 25 to 30 August 2019 NATO Communications and Information Agency, Europol EC3, Leiden University, EY, Dutch Innovation Factory Zoetermeer, The Hague Security Delta and The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies organised the International Cyber Security Summer School (ICSSS 2019). The goal of the summer school was facilitating the sharing of knowledge and providing access to talent in order to enhance our digital security. Taking place in The Hague, the Netherlands, a multidisciplinary group of sixty students and young professionals from 22 countries followed classes on the most current topics in cyber security.

Linking Future Talent with Experts

With backgrounds in technology, policy, law, business and economics, the sixty participants (chosen out of more than 130 applicants) came together to learn more about a much-needed multidisciplinary approach to cyber security. At the same time, these future cyber security experts were brought into contact with experts and professionals from some of the most experienced organisations in the field, creating the access to the talent that is essential to many employers. As one of the co-organisers, Europol EC3, mentioned “cybercrime increasingly affects businesses as well as individuals and with a cost of cybercrime in hundreds of billions of euros the demand for skilled professionals will continue to grow”. Therefore, Europol EC3 covered the law enforcement opportunities and challenges by discussing recent trends, threats, tracing and attribution in ICSSS 2019 in order to inform, inspire and motivate the future cyber-security experts and leaders.

Challenges

During the six-day program, the participants were taught about cyberincidents, cyber risk and threat management, cryptocurrency investigations, cybercrime as a service and the human factor. In addition to lectures from the organising national and international institutions, students received guest lectures from experts from EIT Digital, The Hague University of Applied Sciences and Cybersprint. Moreover, they were challenged to come up with innovative solutions to current cyber security issues provided by organisations such as Palo Alto, The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies and the Institute for Accountability in the Digital Age. On the closing day, students shared their final presentations in the Dutch Innovation Factory, where business, entrepreneurship and education meet.
