Recent Hacks at ASML and Gemalto Show the Importance of Strong Cyber Security Measures

Recently Gemalto, the largest manufacturer of SIM cards in the world, and ASML, the largest supplier in the world of photolithography systems for the semiconductor industry, were attacked by foreign hackers. Next to these two Dutch companies, many other technology companies, with valuable intellectual property, have fallen victim to industrial espionage in recent years. These attacks were not only aimed at obtaining companies’ technologies for economic gains, but also, for example in the case of Gemalto, at obtaining secret encryption keys in order to tap persons of interest.    

As cyber security is a shared responsibility and one of the largest threats organisations currently face, The Hague Security Delta provides a platform where businesses, governments, and knowledge institutions cooperate to develop strong cyber security measures in order to protect the Dutch economy and society as a whole. This cooperation includes sharing knowledge, educating cyber security professionals, and developing security innovations.
