Ron Noble, Secretary General of Interpol, announced this week that the Interpol will take a software into use which is co-developed by the Netherlands Forensic Institute. The software called ‘Bonaparte’ is a suite of next generation forensic software tools designed to facilitate quick human identification. NFI developed Bonaparte in close collaboration with SMART Research BV, a spin-off of SNN Adaptive Intelligence and affiliate of the Radboud University Nijmegen.

The deployment of Bonaparte is part of a wider collaboration between Interpol and NFI, and was announced by Noble during his speech at the opening of the international DNA-conference for forensic researchers in Lyon, France. Noble also emphasised that Interpol is continuously looking for state-of-the-art technological innovations since DNA-research is a continuously evolving field. Noble also stressed the importance of further collaboration with the NFI. “From my point of view, this collaboration is only logical. Both NFI and Interpol believe in the essence and importance of continuous innovation and the development of forensic knowledge all over the world,” Noble said.

Tjark Tjin-A-Tsoi, CEO of NFI, calls the collaboration between the two organisations: “an example of growing globalisation of the forensic domain and the position that NFI is taking internationally”.

Joint effort of great importance to the National Police

Pieter Jaap Aalbersberg, the Dutch member of the executive committee of Interpol and Chief of Police of the Amsterdam-Amstelland unit, also emphasises the importance of a collaboration between Interpol and NFI to the National Police. “A global agreement on standards is a necessity for co-operation between international police. The innovative products of the NFI are of great value for such commitments”, Aalbersberg said.
