International Students Expand Their Knowledge on Cybersecurity in The Hague

This week the fifth edition of the International Cyber Security Summer School (ICSSS 2019) takes place in The Hague, the Netherlands. From the 25th until the 30th of August, a multidisciplinary group of sixty students and young professionals from 22 countries follow classes on the most current topics in cyber security. The Summer School is organised by, and takes place at the locations of, NATO Communications and Information Agency, Europol, EY, Leiden University, Dutch Innovation Factory Zoetermeer and The Hague Security Delta and aims to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and access to talent in order to enhance our digital security.

Linking Future Talent with Experts

With backgrounds in technology, policy and law, the sixty participants (chosen out of more than 130 applicants) have come together to learn more about a much-needed multidisciplinary approach to cyber security. At the same time, these future cyber security experts will be brought into contact with experts and professionals from some of the most experienced organisations in the field, creating the access to the talent that is essential to many employers. As one of the co-organisers, Europol EC3, mentions “cybercrime increasingly affects businesses as well as individuals and with a cost of cybercrime in hundreds of billions of euros the demand for skilled professionals will continue to grow”. Therefore, Europol EC3 covers the law enforcement opportunities and challenges by discussing recent trends, threats, tracing and attribution in ICSSS 2019 in order to inform, inspire and motivate the future cyber-security experts and leaders.

Challenges

During the six-day program, the participants will be taught about cyberincidents, cyber risk and threat management, cryptocurrency investigations, cybercrime as a service and the human factor. In addition to lectures from the organising national and international institutions, students will receive guest lectures from experts from EIT Digital, The Hague University of Applied Sciences and Cybersprint. Moreover, they will be challenged to come up with innovative solutions to current cyber security issues provided by organisations such as Palo Alto, The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies and the Institute for Accountability in the Digital Age. On Friday, the summer school will hold its closing lectures and the students their final presentations in the Dutch Innovation Factory, where business, entrepreneurship and education meet.
