HSD Café: The Future of Big Data

The assumption that big data is the future is widespread. It has taken business, science, and other domains by storm. It allows us to take an outside-in approach to a wide range of issues, varying from customer behaviour to national and international security. Big data is often applauded for its ability to transform society, politics, and business. Yet, when asked the question what the future of big data exactly beholds, few have an answer in place. But, if big data is the future, then what is the future big data?

During this HSD Café, we will discuss the future potential of big data. What are its limits? What are the latest techniques and how can they be applied? But also, how does that affect society from a non-technological perspective? As a society, how will we cope with such changes? We have invited three experts from different branches of the triple helix to share their knowledge and expertise on this subject.

The HSD Café is set up as follows:

From 15:30h until 16:00h, the registration-procedure will take place, in which visitors will receive their name badge. Please make sure you arrive on time, as we would like to start at 16:00h.

From 16:00h until 16:30h, the following experts will share their insights on the matter through brief presentations:

• Elin Berfelo (KPMG) will discuss the limitations and potential of new approaches to big data.

• Freek Bomhof (TNO) will elaborate on how non-technological innovations in regard to big data will affect our society.

• Gideon Shimshon (Director Centre for Innovation Leiden University) will address the future of Big Data in the context of international peace and security.

At 16:30h, the brief presentations will be followed by a discussion, in which the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions and share their views.

From 17:00h onwards, the bar is open for drinks and there will be ample opportunity to network.

About the HSD Café

The HSD Cafés are organised on every first and third Thursday of each month (except on public holidays). From cyber to critical infrastructure, each year 20 sessions will be organised around security topics relevant for businesses, governments, and knowledge institutions. In the first hour (16.00-17.00) of each HSD Café, an expert will briefly present a security topic, dilemma, or innovation, followed by an informal discussion. The second part of the HSD Café (17.00-17.45) will consist of drinks and a possibility to network.
