HSD Café: Security and Intellectual Property
One of the main objectives of HSD is to connect business, government, and knowledge institutions in order to stimulate innovation in a variety security domains. An important component of innovation is intellectual property, which protects the position and interests of the innovator.
In the upcoming HSD Café we will reflect on this topic and discuss its challenges and pitfalls. We will highlight IP Protection, trade secrets and consortium agreements. More importantly, we will discuss how to overcome and/or avoid these challenges and pitfalls. Furthermore, we will reflect on the financing options on the EU-level. These issues will be addressed in four short presentations, followed by a panel discussion.
The HSD Café is set up as follows:
From 16:00 until 16:20, four experts share their insights on the matter through brief presentations:
- Michiel Haegens (V.O. Patents & Trademarks) will give a brief overview of IP rights and how to obtain such rights.
- Ernst-Jan Louwers, together with Huub de Jong (both Louwers IP|Technology Advocaten), will share ways and best practices to enable open innovation and joint R&D. This will include some remarks on disputes and dispute prevention.
- On the basis of a client case, Kasper Haak (V.O. Patents & Trademarks) will illustrate the impact an investor can have on the IP of a company. His 10 golden rules in third-party funding will help you to determine the right conditions for your IP with a funding partner.
- Tim Dekker (PNO Consultants) will discuss the EU financing options for innovative safety and security technological solutions, as well as the related IP issues such EU funded projects present.
At 16:20 the four brief presentations will be followed by a discussion during which questions can be answered. From 17.45 onwards, we welcome you for drinks and there will be ample opportunity to network.

About the HSD Café
The HSD Cafés are organized for HSD partners on every first and third Thursday of each month (except on public holidays). From cyber to critical infrastructure, 20 sessions will be organized around security topics relevant for companies, the government, and knowledge organizations. In the first hour (16.00-17.00) of each HSD Café, an expert will briefly present a security topic, dilemma, or innovation, followed by an informal discussion. The second part of the HSD Café (17.00-17.45) will consist of drinks and a possibility to network. The HSD Cafés provide an excellent opportunity to meet (potential) business partners, bring along your contacts, expand your knowledge, and shape the debate on key security issues of the future. Tell us what you think. Let your voice count, expand your network, and join the debate.
