Together we secure the future.

Multidisciplinary Cooperation in the Fight against COVID-19

English Version

Learning from each other and innovating together with security and privacy by design. That is what happened last weekend with the online Appathon, organized by the Ministry of VWS. With the aim of developing an app that should help us to check the corona virus as much as possible. And that meets the security / privacy requirements and ease of use.

From an international perspective, the choice that the Netherlands make are being looked at with interest, even though there are little mistakes that are undoubtedly made. The open approach and incredible commitment from government, knowledge institutions, companies, hackers and Tech communities (including many from the HSD community) ensure that few apps and systems have been tested so extensively before a (possible) introduction. In addition, it is good that technical specialists, lawyers, psychologists and health scientists are involved in the process. Multidisciplinary: alpha, beta and gamma.

It is excellent to have a broader social debate about the purpose and values of a corona app. It is ultimately up to politicians to decide which app / technology to use to support GGD work, limiting freedom, privacy, security, health and economic interests. I find the courage taken by officials in this process admirable, as is the hard work behind the scenes of many.

The Security audit report from KPMG, published on Sunday evening, confirms that the suppliers still have a lot to do, at least when it comes to the security component.
