Trends in Security Information
The HSD Trendmonitor is designed to provide access to relevant content on various subjects in the safety and security domain, to identify relevant developments and to connect knowledge and organisations. The safety and security domain encompasses a vast number of subjects. Four relevant taxonomies (type of threat or opportunity, victim, source of threat and domain of application) have been constructed in order to visualize all of these subjects. The taxonomies and related category descriptions have been carefully composed according to other taxonomies, European and international standards and our own expertise.
In order to identify safety and security related trends, relevant reports and HSD news articles are continuously scanned, analysed and classified by hand according to the four taxonomies. This results in a wide array of observations, which we call ‘Trend Snippets’. Multiple Trend Snippets combined can provide insights into safety and security trends. The size of the circles shows the relative weight of the topic, the filters can be used to further select the most relevant content for you. Lacking human resources
A lack of skilled personnel is a threat to the continuity and safety of businesses and organisations. When an organisation suffers from a lack of staff, existing staff will be required to work longer hours, in more dangerous situations or with less experience to make up for the difference. Especially niche fields, such off-shore labour, or newer fields, such as cyber security, suffer from market-wide shortages of available skilled personnel. This raises the costs of labour for organisations and drops the quality of work and safety.
It is especially problematic in cyber security and regularly identified as the biggest barrier to implementing cybersecurity tools. As the implementation of manual processes in cyber security are often still critical and with little full automation processes in place, the lack of skilled staff on the market undermines the security posture for the entire economy. The two main issues, one, not enough cyber security professionals altogether and two, a lack of advanced and experienced niche skills, are worsened by the high workload on existing security personnel which makes training and improvements difficult. This means that security tools are not optimally used due to a lack of time to reflect and train with them. Research has indicated that globally the skill gap has been getting worse and poses an existential threat to business continuity.
