Risk-Indicator 'Slippery Slope' wins Secure Your Future Competition 2015

On November 17th, Ingrid van Namen was announced as the winner of the third edition of the Secure Your Future Multimedia-Contest. The jury, led by Jan Wind, made its final decision after two finalists pitched their ideas in front of the visitors of the Earth Observation-Conference in Noordwijk. During this conference, various important actors explored the opportunities within this domain. In addition to Ingrid van Namen, Ferdy Niks was also nominated to present his entry FRAIS.

The winning idea, Slippery Slope is a risk-indicator that aims at the reduction of damage (in its broadest sense) following mudslides. These risk calculations are made by combining the use of satellites (e.g. Sentinel satellites) and weather forecasts. These satellites are able to monitor various factors that are of influence on the emergence of such mudflows. By combining this data with weather forecasts, people will be able to take appropriate measures, as they will have a better idea of the risks waiting ahead of them.

Martijn Seijger, director of ESA-BIC Noordwijk handed out the prizes. Not only did they receive the amount of respectively €1000 and €250, but the members of the jury will also offer them professional guidance and assist them in further developing their ideas into a fully-fledged business case.

Secure Your Future is an initiative by The Hague Security Delta, along with the Royal Institute for Engineers KIVI and technology magazine De Ingenieur. This year’s participants were asked to come up with ideas on how to use satellite data to enhance security. The competition aims to involve both students and entrepreneurs within the security sector, to promote career opportunities and to increase the number of start-ups, innovations, and innovative services in the security domain.
