What if an adversary does not need to access your communications to track you? On 8 October, ARMA Instruments demonstrated how a mobile device’s identity can be used to follow its movements and potentially link it to a physical target. During a live security scenario at Marinevliegkamp Valkenburg / Unmanned Valley in Katwijk, the company showcased how its Dynamic Identity™ technology is designed to disrupt this process.

Secure phones traditionally focus on protecting communications through encryption, hardened operating systems and strong authentication. However, even when the content of communications remains protected, a permanent mobile identity can potentially be observed and linked to a device over time. Repeated observations can reveal movement patterns and ultimately provide information about someone’s location.

From tracking to targeting

During the event, attendees experienced a live capability demonstration featuring a controlled adversary scenario. Two devices were put through an attack chain, showing how a mobile device can be identified, tracked and ultimately linked to a physical target.

ARMA Instruments demonstrated the ARMA G1 and its Dynamic Identity™ technology. The technology allows the device to dynamically change its mobile network identity while communication continues uninterrupted. By changing these identifiers, ARMA makes it more difficult to connect successive observations to the same device.

A different approach to secure communications

The event also showcased the ARMA G1 Mark III, a purpose-built phone for secure messaging and voice communications. The device combines dedicated secure hardware and post-quantum cryptography with an architecture that does not rely on central messaging or call servers.

Alongside the demonstration, the programme included the official ARMA launch, keynotes and presentations from partners, as well as showcases of the U-Series and ARMA Messenger.

Security Delta (HSD) supported the event as an endorsing partner. The demonstration highlighted how digital and physical security can be closely connected and why protecting communications involves more than securing the content of messages and calls.
