ESET Netherlands and the Royal Netherlands Air Force Strengthen Cybersecurity Cooperation

The Royal Netherlands Air Force and ESET Netherlands have signed a letter of intent to strengthen their cooperation. The agreement lays the foundation for broader collaboration in the areas of people, knowledge and specialised cyber expertise, with the shared goal of strengthening the digital resilience of the armed forces and the Netherlands as a whole.

The cooperation builds on a recently established government-wide framework agreement for cybersecurity services. Under the agreement, government organisations will have access to cybersecurity services from European providers under fixed terms and conditions, helping the Dutch government reduce its dependence on non-European suppliers.

Combining people and expertise

For now, the letter of intent focuses on the deployment of people and expertise. The Royal Netherlands Air Force and ESET are exploring how ESET employees could serve as cyber reservists within the Ministry of Defence, as well as how knowledge and expertise can be exchanged between the two organisations.

The partnership will also explore opportunities for cooperation in areas including cybersecurity operations, cybersecurity risk management, incident management and knowledge development.

According to both organisations, military and digital threats are becoming increasingly interconnected. Modern military operations depend on reliable information, while cyber threats continue to evolve rapidly. This calls for closer cooperation between Defence and specialised partners from the private sector.

The role of intelligence and threat information

The Royal Netherlands Air Force has advanced military capabilities, including the F-35. However, deploying these capabilities involves extensive intelligence gathering, analysis, planning and decision-making. This is an area where the expertise of the Royal Netherlands Air Force and ESET could complement each other.

ESET monitors cyber threats and threat actors around the world, building extensive threat intelligence based on its research. This knowledge could contribute to the information picture used by the Royal Netherlands Air Force to assess threats, prepare for potential scenarios and develop operational plans.

Next steps

With the signing of the letter of intent, the Royal Netherlands Air Force and ESET Netherlands have taken an important step towards closer cooperation. In the coming period, both organisations will further explore how knowledge sharing, personnel deployment, training and specialised cyber expertise can be put into practice.
