The HSD Trendmonitor is designed to provide access to relevant content on various subjects in the safety and security domain, to identify relevant developments and to connect knowledge and organisations. The safety and security domain encompasses a vast number of subjects. Four relevant taxonomies (type of threat or opportunity, victim, source of threat and domain of application) have been constructed in order to visualize all of these subjects. The taxonomies and related category descriptions have been carefully composed according to other taxonomies, European and international standards and our own expertise.
In order to identify safety and security related trends, relevant reports and HSD news articles are continuously scanned, analysed and classified by hand according to the four taxonomies. This results in a wide array of observations, which we call ‘Trend Snippets’. Multiple Trend Snippets combined can provide insights into safety and security trends. The size of the circles shows the relative weight of the topic, the filters can be used to further select the most relevant content for you. Conspiracy theories regarding COVID-19 and 5G networks have led to extremists incidents
Multiple conspiracy theories that suggest a relationship between 5G networks and COVID-19 have led to extremists incidents. At the beginning of April 2020, thirty telecommunication masts have been burned down. Seven individuals have been arrested following the incidents.

Verschillende complottheorieën doen de ronde, waarvan degenen die een relatie suggereren tussen 5G-netwerken en COVID-19 daadwerkelijk tot extremistische incidenten hebben geleid in binnen- en buitenland. In Nederland is vanaf begin april 2020 bij dertig telecommasten brand gesticht en zijn zeven aanhoudingen verricht. Er lijkt geen verband te bestaan tussen de verschillende brandstichtingen, noch zijn er aanwijzingen van gedeelde organisatie, coördinatie, aansturing of zelfs een overkoepelende ideologische motivatie. Het plotselinge geweld lijkt grotendeels te zijn geïnstigeerd door de complottheorieën, maar er kan ook sprake zijn van copycats: individuen die zich laten inspireren door eerdere branden en de media-aandacht daarvoor. Mede door de ingrijpende veranderingen van dagelijkse patronen als gevolg van COVID-19 kunnen mensen als uitlaatklep of uit verveling grenzen opzoeken. De abrupte vermindering van brandstichtingen sinds begin mei lijken dergelijke drijfveren te bevestigen: de aanhoudingen en de aandacht in bijvoorbeeld Opsporing Verzocht kan mensen hebben afgeschrikt, terwijl ook de versoepeling van de overheidsmaatregelen mogelijk een rol heeft gespeeld.
