The theme of this HSD Café will be Drones

After a successful HSD Café on drones on the 5th of June, we will host a follow-up Café on the 2nd of October. The main focus of this café will be on the necessary steps towards the safe and full integration of drones into Dutch airspace to the benefit of national security and industrial innovation. The expanding ubiquity of drone technology in the Netherlands offers opportunities for its application in security-related tasks, and for industrial innovation. Yet, the widespread availability of drones also raises numerous questions. Is our privacy at risk? Can airspace safety be guaranteed? How can government agencies, research institutes and commercial companies effectively combine their efforts to fully and safely exploit this new technology? Which conditions have to be met to enable the development and safe operational use of drones?

We have invited three speakers:

First, Willem Oosterveld, Strategic Analyst at the Hague Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS) and project leader of the HSD-study “Blessing in the Skies?” will present the most important findings of the report on the use of UAVs for national security.

Next, Petra Syaifoel, policy officer at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment, will talk about the planned regulatory changes of the current airspace legislation.

Lastly, Jelly Zijlstra, Air Force Advisor at the Netherlands Industries for Defence and Security foundation (NIDV) will advocate for setting up a ‘triple helix for unmanned aircraft’: a partnership between government agencies, research institutes and commercial companies.

From 17.00 onwards the bar is open for drinks and there will be ample opportunity to network.

About the HSD Café
16.00-17.00 Presentation + Discussion
17.00-17.45 Drinks and networking

The HSD Cafés are organized for HSD partners on every first and third Thursday of each month (except on public holidays). From cyber to critical infrastructure, 20 sessions will be organized around security topics relevant for companies, the government, and knowledge organizations. In the first hour (16.00-17.00) of each HSD Café, an expert will briefly present a security topic, dilemma, or innovation, followed by an informal discussion.

The second part of the HSD Café (17.00-17.45) will consist of drinks and a possibility to network. The HSD Cafés provide an excellent opportunity to meet (potential) business partners, bring along your contacts, expand your knowledge, and shape the debate on key security issues of the future. Tell us what you think. Let your voice count, expand your network, and join the debate!

Parking
Unfortunately there is no parking available underneath the HSD Campus. From 14.00h. you can park for free in the neighbourhood.
