This HSD Café will be about the different EU funding opportunities for innovations and research in the security field. We will discuss the different funding opportunities and how your company or organisation can optimise the use of European funds.

After the presentations about EU funding, the winners of the HSD Development Fund will be announced by the deputy mayor of The Hague.

You have probably heard of Horizon2020. But what opportunities does it actually offer to organisations operating in the security sector? What other opportunities are offered by European funding programmes such as the Knowledge & Innovation Communities (KICs) and the European Regional Development Fund? Which relevant calls have recently been published? What are the success factors of receiving funding and how can you increase your chances? How can you translate economic and security ambitions into concrete projects? And how do you form a consortium with the right partners?

In this HSD Café these questions will be addressed by five different experts we have invited to speak on the subject:

Albert van der Steen, EU Manager at TNO, will speak about the opportunities of Horizon2020 for stakeholders in the security field. Specifically he will address the ways HSD partners can join consortia. Furthermore, the  Knowledge & Innovation Communities (KICs) and the importance for HSD will be explained.

Karlijn Jans, policy officer at TNO at the TNO EU Office in Brussels,  will speak about the opportunities the European funding programmes offer for specifically SME’s operating in the security field.

Paul Kruis, national contact point for Horizon 2020 ‘Secure Societies’ at Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO), will introduce the current relevant calls for the security sector. He will furthermore speak about the support the Dutch government can provide to organizations wanting to apply for European funding.

Martijn van Dam, working at ERAC (European and Regional Affairs Consultants) as an European funds consultant, is experienced in the management of European programmes, such as ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) – Kansen voor West, Horizon2020 and ESF (European Social Fund). He will focus on the opportunities the ERDF programme offers for security research and innovation.

Marcel van Berlo, a senior business developer and researcher at TNO, is actively involved in establishing consortia and projects in the European security research arena. He will speak about the challenges and opportunities he has encountered in applying for funding. He will illustrate this by the DRIVER project (Driving Innovation in Crisis Management for European Resilience) in which he is involved.

Announcement winners HSD Development Fund
After the presentations and discussion about the EU funds the deputy mayor of The Hague, Ingrid van Engelshoven, will announce the winners of the second edition of the HSD Development Fund. The winners will be given the opportunity to pitch their winning concept.

HSD Development Fund
The HSD Development Fund was established in July 2013 to support organisations to get through the phase between basic research and the development of a concept model, also known as ‘the Valley of Death’. The Fund is supported by the municipality of The Hague. Proposals were assessed by the city council of The Hague, InnovationQuarter and HSD on their relevance to the security domain, the innovativeness of the ideas, the level of public-private or private-private collaboration, and their potential for creating additional market opportunities. About the HSD Café
The HSD Cafés are organised for HSD partners on every first and third Thursday of each month (except on public holidays). From cyber to critical infrastructure, 20 sessions will be organized around security topics relevant for companies, the government, and knowledge organizations. In the first hour (16.00-17.00) of each HSD Café, an expert will briefly present a security topic, dilemma, or innovation, followed by an informal discussion. The second part of the HSD Café (17.00-17.45) will consist of drinks and a possibility to network.

The HSD Cafés provide an excellent opportunity to meet (potential) business partners, bring along your contacts, expand your knowledge, and shape the debate on key security issues of the future. Tell us what you think. Let your voice count, expand your network, and join the debate!
