Each month KPN organizes a Guest Hacker Program. For this program KPNs Chief Information Security Office (CISO) invites prominent experts from the security industry to tell their story. In the past, Phil Zimmermann, Martin Roesch, Mikko Hyponnen and Karsten Nohl have spoken here. This program is for employees of KPN as well as for customers of KPN.

Our next Guest Hacker Program will take place on the 13th of November. Dave Maasland, CEO of ESET Netherlands, and Robert Lipovsky, Senior Malware Researcher in ESET’s Security Research Laboratory, will give us a presentation titled ‘Attack on Critical Infrastructure’.

Biography
Robert Lipovsky has 10 years’ experience in malware research. His responsibilities include threat intelligence and malware analysis. He leads the Malware Research team in ESET’s HQ in Bratislava, which has – among other notable achievements – uncovered how the world’s first malware-induced blackouts took place, discovered the origin of NotPetya, the most damaging cyberattack in history, and exposed major ISPs injecting commercial spyware into legitimate software downloads. He is a regular speaker at security conferences, including Black Hat USA, Virus Bulletin, Hacktivity, and AVAR.

Subject
In December 2016 a new type of malware was found during the investigation of a hack at the Ukrainian power grid. The malware was made for Industrial Control Systems which are used for controlling operational installations such as power networks, floodgates, traffic systems or installations within factories.

The malware was named “Industroyer” by IT security company ESET which first discovered the malware and published about it in June 2017. ESET began its analysis of the malware after a series of cyber-attacks that cut off the power in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. The discovery went viral after it was published in June and brought attention and action to government officials and utilities around the world.

“The attackers put in a lot of effort to find out how the Industrial Control Systems work”, says Dave Maasland, CEO of ESET Netherlands. “It’s a very coordinated hack attack” he says.

Dave Maasland, together with Robert Lipovsky will give us a look behind the scenes at one of the biggest discoveries in the last years within the field of malware disruption on Industrial Control Systems.
